Created in 2000, Barton is Structured Literacy that is based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. Barton is research- and evidence-based and based on the science of how kids learn to read. Barton does not require a diagnosis of dyslexia, but you should suspect your child has dyslexia. Dyslexia is very common and affects 20% of the U.S. population. Dyslexia is the most common reason a child with at least average intelligence will struggle with reading, spelling or writing. Do you recognize these classic warning signs of dyslexia in your child?
It should be extremely hard for your child to master their weekly spelling list at school.
Your child probably cannot retain their spelling words from one week to the next.
Your child’s spelling should be pretty bad when they write sentences and stories.
Although your child can read, they are probably slow and inaccurate.
When your child comes to a word they do not recognize, they are unable to sound it out despite years of phonics instruction.
